Say hello to Keith

Hi, I’m Keith, the Club Ride Coordinator (30 miles & 40 miles) for York Rouleurs.

I joined the Rouleurs in September 2022 looking to meet and ride with more people, discover new routes each week and liked the idea of exploring other areas of “Greater York” that I had not ventured to before.

I’ve regularly ridden since I bought my first “proper” bicycle in 1995 – dashing round the country roads north of Leeds giving it my best Marco Pantani!  First, I joined York Triathlon Club, which was fun while it lasted (about four years), but I am a terrible swimmer and don’t much like running! But I love the fresh air and open spaces riding a bike gives you. That’s when I found a home in York Rouleurs.

My first Club Ride was memorable to say the least. One of my saddle bolts snapped in the middle of nowhere and, whilst I managed not to fall off, I had to ride standing up for a good few miles before reaching Helmsley. And this is part of what makes the Rouleurs such a great club: whilst I went off to get emergency repairs at the excellent Bike Doctor, the rest of my fellow riders made sure I had a warm brew and breakfast butty waiting for me at the café we had stopped at. One of the best breakfasts I’ve ever had!

So why join the Rouleurs? Well, first and foremost, it’s all about cycling. Not what bike you’ve got. Not what kit you’re wearing. And not how fast or far you can ride. This for me is what makes it a club to be part of: it’s all about the simplicity of riding your bicycle and having a good old chinwag. And with rides to suit all tastes, it means everyone can enjoy being a Rouleur.

My role on the Committee as Ride Coordinator is to conceive, plan and publish the weekly 30- and 40-mile rides that, as far as is practical and possible, includes toilet options and the obligatory café stops. Anyone who wishes to suggest routes, comfort stops or cafes should absolutely feel free to get in touch with me. Always useful to incorporate other people’s ideas and suggestions.

See you out on the road (or possibly the gravel trails!)
