Say hello to Erin
Say hello to Erin! She’s in charge of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion - making sure this Club represents all the fantastic communities and people of York.
I bought my road bike in 2014 because I had foolishly decided to take part in duathlon for a charity close to my heart. The first few months consisted of never turning right (so I didn't have to stop/unclip), never stopping unless next to a lamppost, and not knowing what the front derailleur did (I'm still not 100% confident on that one now to be honest!).
Cycling quickly turned into a really effective way to help me manage grief I had experienced earlier that year, and it became a big part of keeping me physically and mentally well. Cycling was also a big part of my prehab and rehab following a hip replacement in 2021.
But for years I just rode on my own or with my husband. Seeing the Rouleurs out and about on a Sunday morning when I moved to York inspired me to think about joining although I admit it took a lot of time for me to build up the confidence to try a taster ride. My only regret now is waiting so long! My first club ride was really friendly and welcoming. It was over quicker than I expected - the miles really fly by as you chat.
The friendliness and supportive nature of the club inspired me to apply for the post of ED&I rep - I am passionate about everyone having the same opportunity to experience the enjoyment, support and connection of group riding, and to feel confident to come and try a ride without all the self-doubt of thinking the club isn't for me, I won't be fast enough.
I am excited about encouraging and welcoming under-represented groups in cycling into the club, and so buzzed this year that we have women lifting women up to ride further, faster and in our own events!
