Club Ride Formation
Rouleurs Ride Together
On Club Rides we ride in pairs - a formation known as Two-Up. Two cyclists at the front with the rest of group riding behind. Two parallel lines alongside each other, keeping as close to the rider in front as comfortable.
When you ride behind another cyclist you reduce wind resistance and increase speed. We call it “drafting”.
Riding together as a group can reduce your effort by up to 30%. That’s science!
If the lead riders rotate position, it allows the rest to shelter from the wind and ensures the effort is evenly shared.
By working together as a team, you travel further faster for less energy - so ultimately reach the coffee stop sooner!
Riding with a group means you go faster, work less, have more fun and ultimately are safer on the road.
How to rotate in a group
To rotate the front riders, the group will shift positions in an anti-clockwise direction.
The rider at the front will call 'READY TO ROTATE'. The call is passed down the group to ensure everyone is ready to rotate. The rider at the front will call “ROTATE TWO” to initiate the change.
The rider at the front of the left-hand (inside) lane will slow slightly, allowing the rider at the front of the right-hand (outside) lane to move left into their position.
The left-hand rider shouts “clear” to signal it’s safe for the right-hand rider to move across.
The next rider the right-hand lane moves forward to ride alongside the new left-hand leader.
The rider at the back of the left-hand lane shifts right to join the end of the right-hand lane.
